Imagine Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom Of The Opera starring Lady Gaga in the title role, directed by Tim Burton. Then you'll imagine all the characters wearing Victor Hugo's Material Memorieeyewear, all at once a theatrical production of the macabre, exotic, unconventional, and glamorous.
The Designer:
Visual artist and designer Victor Hugo honed his craft at leading art and design schools in the US studying illustration and graphic design while dabbling in fashion design, photography and sculpture. Before founding Material Memorie in July 2010, Hugo created props and window displays for big retailers with a side passion for making and costume pieces—transitioning to masks and eyewear was an easy transition. After making ,Lady Gaga-inspired shades for friends, his goth-glam pieces became a hit among runway and urban street fashion circles.
The Production:
The calling card of Hugo's collections is as its name suggests—its materials. Describing his style as "macabre-luxe", Hugo combines claws, resins, and skulls (all ethically sourced through Native American tribe vendors) with leathers and Swarovski details to bring his dark sensibility to life. All Material Memorie pieces are made to order upon purchase, and the intricacy of the handmade process means production may take up anywhere from a few hours to two weeks to complete, depending on the style.
"Whatever I'm inspired by at the moment usually dictates what materials (goes into a design)," says Hugo. "Being lucky enough to live in New York, the world is my oyster as far as materials as involved."

Who Wears This?:
"I've found the people who buy my eyewear are fearless leaders in their own right," says Hugo. "They're not the kind of people you would miss seeing and they're certainly not scared of standing out in a crowd."
Hugo's customers wear Material Memorie to nightclubs, fashion shows, concerts, parties, and even to the classroom.

As Seen On...:
Although it's easy to imagine any of Hugo's eyewear on Lady Gaga—his Little Monster Hauscollection is inspired by the Queen of Quirk herself—he insists that he's "never been focused on celebrities" (although he's outfitted many Little Monsters going to her shows!). Hugo believes he's in the business of making rock stars, and his work is most rewarding when someone puts on his eyewear and feels—yes, like a celebrity.
Say It:
"A lot of designers forget that fashion is meant to tell stories."
"I'm in love with all my designs and I secretly think picking a favorite might upset the others."
"I believe I'm in the business of making rock stars... if you aren't one, at least you should see like one."

"Expected The Unexpected":
The Fall and Winter 2012 Material Memorie collection was inspired by the New York nightlife—lush, striking, impressionable, over the top, and never, ever under the radar. It's like a full-fledged Broadway of Met production on your visage—forget those fuddy-duddy opera glasses.
"The collection represents the concept of moonlit opulence... a homage to the wild, outrageous, fashionable children of the night," explains Hugo, who brought these inspirations to bodacious being with intricate metal work, stingray leathers, and Swarovski crystals. He points to the collection's Nebula as the most challenging eyewear piece he has created to date, cheap cartier wood frames, because he had to drawn upon a variety of his skill sets to produce this plastic cat-eye frame embellished with a neo-Seventies futuristic disco look, studded with white Swarovski crystals.
Stepping out of his (un)usual realm to design exclusive pieces, Hugo has also just released a collaboration with punk accessorizer Johnlery, featuring fit-over shield sunglasses studded with silver-finish horns, studs, and spikes and sunglasses with a baroque-style gold trim.
